Rookie Ekpharit triumphs in Taiwan Glass Taifong Open

Thailand’s Ekpharit Wu secured his first Asian Tour victory during his rookie season by narrowly defeating local favorite Hung Chien-yao at the Taiwan Glass Taifong Open. Wu, 26, finished the tournament at 20-under par with a strong final round of 67 at the par-72 Taifong Golf Club, capitalizing on Hung’s errors late in the game with consecutive bogeys on holes 15 and 16. This triumph elevated Wu from 73rd to 28th in the Asian Tour Order of Merit and earned him entry to the upcoming $5 million PIF Saudi International in Riyadh.

Hung, despite his late setbacks, improved his ranking significantly, moving from 110th to 57th and maintaining his streak of 12 consecutive seasons on the Asian Tour. Guatemala’s Jose Toledo and Sweden’s Charlie Lindh tied for third place at 12-under, while Pakistan’s Ahmad Baig narrowly missed a tie at that score due to a bogey on the last hole. The Korean pair Heemin Chang and Wooyoung Cho, along with Thailand’s Poosit Supupramai, tied for sixth.

Wu began the final day just one stroke behind Hung and managed to level the score with a birdie on the seventh hole before Hung briefly regained the lead with a birdie on the eighth. However, Hung faltered on the 15th and 16th holes, allowing Wu to pull ahead, and despite parring the final two holes, Hung could not catch up. Wu credited his win to focus and trusting himself, with support from his wife Pam who was caddying for him. He also expressed pride in making his father, originally from Chinese Taipei, proud as the one who taught him golf.

Hung expressed disappointment but remained positive, attributing his loss to bad luck and a need to work harder. Toledo, who shot the day’s lowest round of 65, was optimistic about securing his Asian Tour card for the next season. Lindh, hindered by an early double bogey, accepted his week as his best performance on the Asian Tour so far.

This tournament marked the 18th event of the 2025 Asian Tour season, which will continue next in Riyadh for the prestigious PIF Saudi International.
